Why Am I Getting Different Counts for the Same Page Across Different URLs?

Our share counters, as well as the counters for Facebook Like, Tweet, Google Plus One and other third-party buttons count the number of shares for the full URL, including the domain, directory structure and filename. Even if the following URLs are the same page, the counts will be different:

  • http://example.com/
  • http://www.example.com/
  • http://www.example.com/index.html

There are a few ways around this problem. First, you could define the URL to share in the AddThis toolbox, like this:

<div class=”addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style ” addthis:url=”THE URL”>

(Replace THE URL with the URL of the page you’d like to share.)

Second, you could set the canonical URL to share by adding this to the <head> section of your site. This has the advantage of also improving your SEO. Here’s an example:

<link rel=”canonical” href=”THE URL”>

(Replace THE URL with the URL of the page you’d like to share.)

Finally, you could configure your site to redirect to only one URL from the three. How you do this depends on your web application and hosting platform.
