“Honey, I lost the buttons!”

We’ve received some questions lately from folks whose AddThis buttons seem to have disappeared. Naturally, this would be really disconcerting, so here are a few things that you can look into to calm your nerves!

Can you connect to AddThis?

AddThis buttons are generated using JavaScript and CSS that’s stored on our servers, so if your computer doesn’t have access to these servers, you won’t be able to see the buttons. This can happen for a number of reasons, but is usually related to adware or malware blocking software. Verify you have access by going to these URLs:

If you experience errors visiting any of those URLs, or see something that doesn’t look like AddThis, you don’t have access to AddThis and therefore the buttons won’t show up. If you can identify which software is blocking AddThis, follow the prompts to unblock us, and the buttons should show up.

Do you have all the code on the page?

If you’ve recently made changes to your site another problem might be that you didn’t put everything back on the page. View the source of your page (by right-clicking or Control-click your page, and select “View Source” or “View Page Source”) and use the find command to make sure you’ve got the following items on the page:

  • Our addthis_widget.js. This script loads all the other code that displays our buttons. If it’s not on the page then none of the buttons will show up:
    <script src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/300/addthis_widget.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
  • If you have any inline tools activated, make sure you also have the code for those tools on page. It will look something like this:
    <div class="addthis_sharing_toolbox"></div>

Are you using WordPress?

First, make sure the plugin hasn’t somehow been deactivated. If you recently changed your theme, make sure it uses the the_content() function instead of get_the_content() as the latter doesn’t include the callback that adds the AddThis buttons to your posts.

Finally, if you’ve got a caching plugin like WP Super Cache make sure that you flush these to ensure the buttons get added to your posts.

Still don’t see them?

If you’re still not seeing the buttons after checking the steps above, you may be having another issue. In that case, contact our support team, and we’ll be happy to help!

My buttons disappeared cause uBlock Origin Plugin for Chrome
I know many people using it, how i can prevent such behavior?
Maybe change classes for widget DOM elements?

Sharing is not an ad, its really helpful everytime even if we need to share something in messengers

  • Unfortunately there isn’t anything we can do on our end if someone chooses to block us via a plugin like uBlock Origin. However, some ad blocker plugins that are blocking our buttons do have an option to disable blocking share buttons.

Hello, I have the buttons on my site but the the box that shows the number of shares is expanded vertically about more than half a page and it pushes everything down.

  • Hello! This certainly doesn’t sound like the tool is functioning properly on your site. Can you please send us a screenshot and a link to the page to help [at] addthis [dot] com? Our support team will be able to take a closer look at this for you and assist.

You should really consider changing the domain for the scripts. AdBlock and uBlock blocks anything that starts with “ad” so they aren’t specifically targeting you. You just happen to have a name that starts with “ad”. Also elements with a class that starts with “ad” will be removed as well.

As an ad-viewer, I would like to see more tools for us.

You appear to have lots of tools for the web site owner, but few for the ad-viewer. I can only find the opt-out tool for targeted ads. I don’t mind targeted ads, so I’d rather not reduce the revenue for the sites I visit.

But on the other hand, I essentially never share links, and when I do it is manually via email so I never use that bar stuck to the side of the page. If I interact with that bar at all, it is out of frustration. Usually because it is hiding some content on that side of the page. My interaction with the image pop-up is similar. When that happens, I end up invoking the dev tools in the browser and deleting the offending elements.

How about an opt-out tool for these tool bars that I will never use. The more times these kinds of ad tools get in the way, the more I am tempted to install a tool like uBlock Origin. I understand the need for advertising and I want to support the sites I visit. But your tool bars are too invasive at the moment.

This isn’t a matter of advertising, but a matter of privacy. AddThis isn’t about recommandation, but about collecting data about users and resell it to marketers. It is why so many ad blocker luckily block it. Changing server wouldn’t do anything: people that matters about privacy are going to simply change the filtering rule.

If you really want to give the opportunity for your visitors to share content and respect at the same time their right to privacy, it would be a safer guest to put AddThis aside and find a sharing “widget” that wouldn’t rely on third party service or, at least, collect user data. That would be the best for your users.

  • Julien Simard

Collecting data and selling it is AddThis bread and butter. Their “free” social widget for website developer is simply their trojan horse to do so. And unfortunately, a lot of webmaster simply aren’t aware of this and simply install AddThis since this is convenient.
