Clark Kent Wins the Social Popularity Contest (Sorry Katniss!)

With the Golden Globe nominations announced yesterday, we have movies on our mind. This year’s top grossing movies have kept us on the edge of our seat with action and warmed our hearts with sequels to animated films.

The highest grossing movies this year so far are Iron Man 3, Despicable Me 2, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Man of Steel, and Monsters University. We took a social look at these movies to see how users engage during the month of their theater release.

For all five movies, Facebook took the #1 spot for sharing content about the movie. Twitter is next in line with other services like Google+ and Reddit making up a portion of sharing.

Next we looked at the top actor or actress in each film to see how much social engagement increased for him or her during the month of the release. Newcomer Henry Cavill saw the greatest increase in social mentions for his role as Clark Kent in Man of Steel. Even though Jennifer Lawrence’s haircut was enough to prompt a CNN news alert, she saw the smallest increase in social mentions for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

There were also geographic differences in sharing for the movies. Action films Man of Steel and Iron Man 3 saw strongest social mention intensity in California and New York. Meanwhile, family-friendly animated films Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University were popular in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and New Hampshire.

2013 was an incredible year for blockbuster movies. Do you have a favorite movie from this year?
