With the U.S. and the Netherlands taking the lead in the Sochi medal count and Germany with the most gold medals, ice dancing and the skeleton took the gold in social popularity this week.
Last week we saw snowboarding, ski jumping, and team figure skating taking the lead for Sochi Olympic sports. This week, we see that ice dancing was the sport that generated the largest increase in social engagement. Skeleton was popular socially early in the week.
Polish cross-country gold medalist Justyna Kowalcyzk provoked attention with her win even though she was nursing a broken foot. Snowboarder Eva Samkova generated strong engagement after American Jacobellis fell and lost her place leading the pack. Americans Charlie White and Meryl Davis brought home the first American gold medal in ice dancing, which everyone was talking about after the competition.
