Audience Targeting: Drive More Conversions

For the first time ever, you can target your visitor with the right message at the right time using either our Welcome Bar or Marketing Overlay tool (formerly known as the Conversion Lightbox). Introducing: AddThis Audience Targeting.

The ability to target your audience has traditionally been available only to advertisers looking to target an ad campaign to the specific audience. But now, all AddThis users can use our tools to leverage this same intelligence, and help give your website visitors a more personal experience that drives engagement, and increases conversions.

Audience Targeting will give you the reigns to finally take more control over how your website is presented to different sets of audiences coming to your website. By creating an Audience Targeting rule either in the Welcome Bar or the Marketing Overlay tool, you’ll be able to give each one of your visitors a personal Web experience. That helps increase the opportunity for more signups, subscriptions and conversions, even if this the first time that they’ve ever come to your website!

How to Set it Up

How It Works

You can choose to target visitors with a specific message and call-to-action depending on where they came from, their online behavior and what interests (sports, family, health, etc;) they have. For example, say you want to target those who are interested in sports with a “Sign up for my sports newsletter” call to action when they arrive on your site. Your tools are backed by our massive data (we’re on 14 million sites worldwide), and we’ll help you get that message out to the audience that’ll find it relevant.

You’ll be able to target visitors based on their interests (like what kinds of sites they like to visit) and whether they’re new or returning visitors. You’ll even be able to know if the visitor’s using a mobile device or desktop.

Test Different Messages

Long gone are the days where you have to send a blanket message to the masses! With Audience Targeting, you can test multiple messages to see which resonate best with returning visitors, new visitors, visitors who come from social sites, and so on. By being able to test into these messages, you’ll increase your chances of engaging with your audience and increasing conversions.

Analytics Included

Monitor the success of your Audience Targeting rules right in your AddThis dashboard. See how targeting specific audiences is performing against the norm, and easily adjust your targeting if need be.

Try it Free!

Best of all, Audience Targeting is available for both Basic and Pro users! Using the Welcome Bar, Basic users can set one Audience Targeting rule for their visitors. Pro users can set up more than one campaign with multiple rules using both the Welcome Bar and the Marketing Overlay tool.

We hope you’re just as excited as we are! Sign in to your AddThis dashboard now to set up your first Audience Targeting rule!

I’ve been struggling with a good popup plugin for WordPress, and this might do the trick for most of my clients. I just wish there was a little more flexibility in adding custom code – for example, I’d love to be able to put a Facebook like box in there for some users. Any way to make that happen?

  • Carolyn McKinney

Oh, and a place for some custom CSS would be awesome too. :)

  • R Michael Davies

Hi there, we use PopupAlly Pro. Much better, and customizable.

  • Ah, good feedback. We definitely want to beef up this product, so we’re taking your suggestion to the team. It’s a good one! Thanks! Let us know how it goes when you try it.

  • Dong Hwan Kim

Hi, I think it is good idea, ever.
But can I use it other country’s customer? like South Korea(It’s my location)

  • Carolyn McKinney

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll check it out. My favorite so far has been Popup Pro (it has a lot of nice conditionals available), but it has been a little buggy.

  • Carolyn McKinney

Fantastic! I think custom code would be more important, especially because people without Mailchimp or Aweber could theoretically use the tool if they could paste in their own embed code.

  • Nice functionality!

How we can assure us that custom messeges may reach&receive to the right person andwill be protectedif we could not assure that delivery to the person has been made and we could not got deleivery report.Thanks.

  • nice

  • Good thinking!

  • You can use our products anywhere in the world!

  • Thanks Ian! Let us know if you have any feedback!

  • Carolyn McKinney

I’ve implemented this for a couple of my clients already, and so far so good. Some quick feedback of additional functionality that would be nice: (1) more control over when it is shown and how often (for example, scroll percentages or time delay and show once a week – these would be particularly helpful in doing version testing so we know what is most effective); (2) different color picker for background color and button color (I think having a different color button would draw more attention to it, and perhaps increase conversions); and (3) option to hide the “no” button.

Overall, though, it is great – easy to implement, responsive, and very clean looking. I’m sure this product is a big win for a lot of people.

  • Shannon

Thanks for the feedback – truly appreciate it! I will pass this along to our engineers and we’ll post an update once we’ve made additional changes based on what we’ve collected. PS.. Some of this we’re already working on :)

We use data collected from over 13 million websites that use our tools to help us narrow down specific online behaviors in which to speak to each visitor differently. So you can rest assured that when you select an audience segment, it is the correct segment that will be seeing your message. You can also check to see how your messages are performing in the dashboard and make changes if one doesn’t perform or is outperforming the rest. Hope that helps!

  • I’m glad with your services, thank you so much.

  • generationpolitics

If you want to piss off your user base this is a good way to go.

  • Hi there, thanks for your feedback. We’ve designed our tools to do just the opposite: to make a user’s experience more personal and to not be intrusive. Site owners can choose which type of visitor they’d like to target (new vs. returning, etc.) so they can message appropriately. Based on some case studies we’ve done with site owners who are using our tools, we know it’s been working well for them.

  • All the points are explained very clearly, Great source of information. Thanks for en-lighting us with your knowledge, it is helpful for many of us. I was searching for pop-up messages to implement on my website from long time. Finally, i got the best one.

  • How can i remove Target ? it has no longer displayed when installed in “Archived messages” ??
I can not find it, help me. Thank you

  • Are you trying to reactivate an archived message? If so, open the archived message and save it again. This will move it from “archived” to “active”.

I am very thankfull to disqus and happy i got answer &a perfect satisfaction of my question, very gratefull to discus team.Regards.

Is it possible to not include all the CSS when you are not actively using the targeting? Currently have no active campaigns, but there is a TON of css in the head of all our pages.

  • Hi Laura, unfortunately this isn’t possible.

  • Hi Laura, unfortunately this isn’t possible.

  • Andy P.

We want to display a new custom message each week, but only want it to show up once for each visitor each time the message changes. The only audience targets I see are Everyone, or New/Returning Visitors. Is it possible to have the message display to every visitor who hasn’t yet seen the message?
