How to Target New Visitors with a Specific Call-to-Action

The other week we published a blog post about seven ways you can increase conversions on your website with AddThis Marketing Tools. It was loaded with great suggestions on ways to market to users differently based on their source, behavior, and interests.

So, let’s get started. Here are 3 ways you can better convert new visitors:

1. Encourage people to sign up for your newsletter or subscriber list.

You can use our Welcome Bar or Marketing Overlay to target new visitors with a specific Audience Targeting rule that asks them to subscribe. One difference between the Welcome Bar and Marketing Overlay is how they display. The Welcome Bar appears at either the top or bottom of your page, and the Marketing Overlay appears as a lightbox that covers the entire page.

If you’re concerned about interrupting a visitor with this request when they first land on your site, don’t worry. You can choose to display the Marketing Overlay tool after a certain number of page views or when the user exhibits intent to leave.

2. Offer new users a first-time deal.

If you have an e-commerce site, you can use the Welcome Bar or the Marketing Overlay to display an Audience Targeting rule that provides them with a discount or promo code for their first purchase. The message displays a button that will direct them to a URL of your choice. It’s a great way to hook potential customers or promote a specific page on your site.

You can even target visitors based on their interests. This way if you’re selling a variety of products or publishing content that spans different subjects, you can choose which audience will see your message. You can target interests based on areas such as health, family, food, and more.

3. Get them to follow you on social media.

Because new visitors are more likely to bounce than those who have visited your site before, it’s a good idea to try to catch their attention as quickly as possible. This way you have a greater chance of bringing them back in the future.

With either the Welcome Bar or the Marketing Overlay, you can target visitors coming to your site from a specific social network with a message to start following you. For instance, if someone clicks through to your site from a tweet they saw, you can ask them to follow you on Twitter.
