How We Turned Visitors Showing Exit Intent into Customers

online-customer

At AddThis, we, like all websites, care about increasing engagement and conversions on our site. In this post, we wanted to share how we were able to turn visitors showing exit intent into registered AddThis users.

Problem

addthis-homepages

We recently updated our homepage to more accurately showcase ALL that AddThis does, including our new offerings for brands and agencies, in addition to our awesome website marketing tools. While this was the right move for the company, it changed the default path for visitors looking to acquire website tools — and in particular it made it harder to highlight sharing buttons and increased the chance our visitors would bounce.

Solution

Our goal is always to optimize navigation and UX. So, as we continue to refine the look and feel of our website, we were very focused on ensuring that visitors accomplished what they came to the site to do.

In this particular case, we wanted to confirm that visitors looking for our world class Sharing Buttons could, in fact, find them. To make this easy, we installed the Audience Targeting Overlay on all potentially relevant pages. We targeted this overlay to all visitors showing exit intent. The message read “Are you looking for Sharing Buttons?” and redirected them to the sharing buttons landing page.

Results

It worked! The Overlay successfully engaged visitors showing exit intent, and turned many of them into registered users.

Specifically, we saw:

  • 3.39% conversion rate from the overlay
  • Directly accounted for 12% of all registrations in less than 2 weeks

Call to Action

Does a 12% lift in your website’s metrics sound exciting? Learn more about how you can use the AddThis Audience Targeting Overlay to engage visitors and convert them into customers.

  • Thanks for the tip. We added AddThis to our site, Rewards.com, this week and it’s been a great addition. I added this tip to our site this morning that will pop up on specific pages. It’s fun to chart audience interaction through the analytics and we are about to change the functionality of our site to adapt to the AddThis functionality to sign up new members. It’s been a great customer interaction and acquisition tool for sure.

It shows the strategy, which is great, but doesn’t show how to implement that yourself. I cant find in add this custom messages where you select exit intent as a target audience.

  • Hey Tony – so we didn’t actually choose exit intent as a target audience, we chose to display the message when they were showing exit intent, in other words, when they were preparing to leave the site. To choose this you go to ‘more option’ in the Custom Message navigation and choose ‘show this message’ where you will find ‘exit intent’ as a choice. Let me know if that helps!

  • I added your tool on my homepage and for one week or I did not have it after I ranked and then I added it to my site. I noticed some visitors staying longer then before and I got 3 leads in one week, although none went on to buy my service. I guess your tool works.

  • I agree its really simple to use though. But I have the free plan or the 2 free, does this work for that a well? That seems like it would help me a lot.

  • I added your tool on my homepage of my new SEO Minneapolis website last week;
and for one week or so I did not have it after I ranked and then I added it to my site the second week. And here is what I noticed; some visitors staying longer then before and some around same average and I got 3 leads in one week, I was amazed although none went on to buy my service. I guess your tool works. I will see how it goes this week. I hope I added everything correctly and did what was instructed.

I have been using this for a week: it’s very easy to configure and implement. However, when testing it out, the exit intent is not immediately triggered and I’ve noticed that you would have to move the mouse multiple times closer to the exit button. Is there a way to reduce this delay?

    Thanks

  • Hi Christian, I just spoke with our support team about this. Would you mind please emailing us at help@addthis.com with a link to the site you’re working on? That way we can take a closer look for you and see if there’s something that needs tweaking. Thanks!
