The Next Level – Welcome Ramsey McGrory as Clearspring’s new CEO

(Originally posted on the Clearspring blog)

Today, we’re taking Clearspring to the next level.  I am excited to welcome Ramsey McGrory on as our new CEO. Ramsey joins us from Yahoo! where he led Right Media, the pioneer in the online ad exchange business. From 2004 to 2011 he was with them from start-up what is now a $1 billion annual revenue business. His deep understanding of advertising and data, coupled with a demonstrated ability to deliver value to publishers, advertisers and consumers make him an invaluable addition.  Together with our already impressive team, board and investors, we’re confident that this move will help us continue our fantastic growth by better serving our customers.

We have experienced phenomenal growth since our first investor came on in 2006.. AddThis is the now web’s largest sharing platform used by over 9 million publishers, reaching more than 1 billion people worldwide.  We process as much data in one week as the Library of Congress.  Launched just last year, our Audience Platform leverages data from AddThis to enable hundreds of brands like AT&T and Sony to connect with hundreds of millions of socially-connected users via real-time advertising.  And this growth has been recognized.  Last week we were named to Business Insider’s Digital 100 Most Valuable Start-ups on the heels of making the Inc500 and AlwaysOn Global 250 Top Private Companies.

We’re at an inflection point.  If we continue this growth, we will open up opportunities to serve our customers at a scale we never imagined.  To date, we’ve been lucky to bring on amazing people and partners to support our scaling efforts.  Our leadership has helped grown the team over 100% in the first half of this year.  We are proud to have Springers in McLean, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, Lancaster, New Jersey, Atlanta and even India.  This spring, IVP joined our already-impressive investor team by leading our $20 million Series D financing.  With Ramsey on board, we believe that we can now not only keep this pace, but have the ability to go even faster.

As for me, I will now be Executive Chairman and work closely with Ramsey and team.  In this new role, I will steer the board and product and marketing operations.  AddThis was viewed approximately 2.86 billion times last Monday.  If each user viewed the page they visited for at least a second, that’s over 90 collective years of human attention that we saw that day alone.  I’m looking forward to figuring out ways to unlock this data to make a better web for us all.As always, we welcome your feedback on how we’re doing and what else you’d like to see from us.   We hope that you’re as excited about these changes as we are at Clearspring.  Welcome, Ramsey!

Track Copy and Paste Shares Using Address Bar Analytics, Get Real-time Perspective with Live View

We’re introducing several new features that make AddThis the first sharing platform to enable you to see all sharing activity occurring from your site in real-time.

AddThis Analytics enable you to track how sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Email and other services impact your traffic.  To date, our analytics covered sharing occurring solely through our tools.  Today, however, we now give you the ability to track one of the biggest sources of shares – URL’s that are cut and pasted from the address bar – using Address Bar sharing analytics.

Address Bar sharing analytics give you the ability to track URLs that have been sent via emails, IMs and to forums using copy/paste. This captures a whole new segment of sharing that we have found to be up to 10x that of using social buttons. You now get a larger picture of where your direct traffic is coming from and how your users are really sharing your content.

We’ve also launched a Live View dashboard, which displays shares and clicks as they are happening. You can even open up a map to see our Geo Live View, showing shares and clicks popping up in the geographical location that they are happening!

With these new tools, you will gain even greater insight into what content is resonating with your users as well as gauge when and how certain articles gain traction. You can start making real-time editorial decisions to maximize your users’ engagement. Try them out and find out why partners like ‘USA Today’ are excited to use these tools.

We’ve also launched the ability to track activity from native Facebook LikeTwitter tweet and Google +1 buttons.  This is just the beginning of a larger analytics and data API push – stay tuned.

Clearspring Raises $20MM from IVP

(Originally posted on the Clearspring blog.)

We’re excited to announce that we’ve just closed an investment round led by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). IVP has backed some of the best data-driven companies on the web, including Twitter and Zynga. 86 out of the 300 companies they last invested in have gone public.

In the last couple of years, we’ve grown tremendously across the board. AddThis is now used by over 9MM domains, reaching over 1B unique users monthly. It’s so popular that we’re now one of a handful of sites to have a Google PageRank of 10. We’re processing 10TB of data/day – every week, we process as much data as the entire digital Library of Congress.

AddThis has in turn fueled the growth of our Audience Platform, enabling hundreds of advertisers to deliver more relevant advertising. All the while we’ve been hiring as fast as we can to continue to support the needs of all the great companies that use our products.

We want to thank all of you for working with us over the years. We hope to show you just how thankful we are by putting this money to work on great new products. As always, if you have any ideas about how we can better serve publishers and advertisers, hit us up.

Look forward to continuing to rock (and roll) with all of you!

Cheers,

Hooman

We’re pleased to announce that Clearspring has been named one of the 2011 OnMedia 100 Top Private Companies by AlwaysOn. It’s an honor to be included alongside so many other great companies, such as Groupon and Tumblr, that are driving the future of the social web.

We want to thank all the publishers, service providers, and advertisers that have driven the tremendous growth of the AddThis network for making this possible. Together, we’re making great strides to better connect publishers, advertisers and service providers with the audiences on the Social Web.

Finally thanks to the AlwaysOn team for recognizing our hard work over all these years. We have consistently been recognized as a leader in social media:

Come visit us at OnMedia NYC on Feb 1st where we will be speaking alongside advertising pioneers Joe Zawadski (CEO MediaMath) and Brian O’Kelley (CEO AppNexus) discussing “How the Mathematicians and Rocket Scientists took over the Advertising Industry”.

Stay tuned for more announcements – 2011 is going to be an exciting year!

AddThis is Now the Switchboard for Sharing Content Online

At AddThis, our vision is to empower publishers to enable their users to share anything, to anyone, anywhere. Today, we are realizing a big part of that vision.

Over the last year, the number of requests we have received for additional services grew faster than ever before. As we manually added support for more sharing destinations, the expanded list of services became so long that it was getting harder for users to find the services they used most often.

Today, we’re introducing the first community-driven platform to take advantage of this demand, which enables content to be shared by users to any destination on the web. This platform has two components – an open Service Directory and smart menu technology.

The Service Directory is a self-serve system enabling 3rd parties like Posterous, Hyves or the even the next Twitter to make their service available to the millions of AddThis users around the Web. All it takes is a few minutes to fill out a simple web form. We’ve had this feature available in private beta for over a month, and in that short time we’ve already added 100

new services. Our hope is that with the help of our community, we can support sharing to every social network, social bookmarking or social media site – big or small. We believe that people should be able to share to their communities, wherever they are.

Also, as of today we’ve introduced a new sharing menu optimization technology that personalizes the experience of each of the 534MM users that AddThis touches on a monthly basis. We leverage a number of parameters to deliver this experience such as a user’s sharing history and browser language. For example, if a user has previously shared to Hyves using AddThis, Hyves will now be highlighted in that user’s AddThis menu — everywhere.

Additionally with this release, we’re launching support for over 30 new languages. These languages were submitted as part of the community translation program that we kicked off back in April. Now users can enjoy the power of sharing with AddThis in 50 languages.

The Service Directory and smart menu technology, coupled with the Language Database, make AddThis the first open platform empowering users to share the content they love, anywhere in the world. We are excited about where our community will take these tools. Thank you for your continued support.
