AddThis Users Help Make AddThis Better

Here at AddThis, we are always encouraging you to reach out and share your comments with us – any question, piece of feedback or suggestion you have, we want to hear it – and there is a reason for that. We are listening! Here are a few examples:

  • WordPress – Just the other day, we released the new version of AddThis for WordPress. The new features were largely compiled through user requests. Following the release, we collected very helpful feedback and were able to push out some fixes only a day later.
  • Facebook Pop-up Share – We’d received requests for the Facebook share experience to not open a new tab and instead use the pop-up box method. You can find the code for this sort of implementation in our client API docs.
  • Adding Services – Recently, we had lots of people asking my.mail.ru to be added to our service offerings, so we made sure to give that to them because they deserve simple sharing too! If you see a service you want added to our menu, please let us know.
  • Sharing, Your Way – We already personalize our tools as you use them, so it’s easy to share to your favorite services. But now, in addition, you can also choose your own favorite places to share! Because if you want to drive, we’re happy to let you sit in the driver’s seat.

So, what are you waiting for? If you have any brilliant ideas or just a little piece of feedback, please send it our way or write in the comments below. You can bet we will listen! We appreciate our community’s contribution to making AddThis the best sharing product on the web.

7 New Services to Share with AddThis

Yesterday we released seven new services to the AddThis menu. Armenix, AnonTalk, cOOtopia, Indexor, InvestorLinks.com, Upnews.it, and yiid.

We are constantly updating our service list to make sure that it is easy to share content everywhere online. If there is a service you like to use that is not included in the AddThis menu, please shoot us a note and we’ll do what we can to get it in there!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us or post in the comments below.

Double Your Shares with the Personalized Toolbox

Did you know that by using the personalized version of the AddThis Toolbox on your site that you can see a 2x increase in sharing?

This shows the AddThis personalized Toolbox with the 32x32 icons of places previously shared or based on browser language and popularity.
This shows the AddThis personalized Toolbox with the 32x32 icons - with places previously shared or based on browser language and popularity.

Visually, the personalized Toolbox looks the same, but oh, it does so much more! For this personalized version, we have done voodoo magic so the toolbox will see each unique visitor to your site and show that person options which encourage them to share the MOST. We look at browser language and favorite services, among other things, to determine which services to present in the menu. For example, internally, the AddThis team loves to share and communicate via Yammer, so when many of us come across a toolbox anywhere on the web, we’re shown the recognizable Yammer icon. Wow, magic!

You can also personalize any AddThis menus on other implementations - here you can see it with the share counter.

If you were one of the publishers to implement the Toolbox when we first introduced it, well, you are very smart! But more importantly, you may now be missing out on this extra feature that very likely will increase your sharing. So, make sure you grab the newer code and get double the sharing!

If you have any questions about adding the personalized Toolbox to your site or about updating your implementation to have a personalized menu – please reach out to us and we’ll help you through the process.

AddThis Analytics API – Programmatic Access to Your Share Data

Have you seen the AddThis Analytics API? It gives you programmatic access to your sharing data. Utilizing the Analytics API is a great way to take your sharing data and put it to work for you.

Some of the things you can do with the Analytics API:

  • Integrate your AddThis sharing data into your internal monitoring dashboard,
  • Create custom queries to get whole new looks into your sharing data,
  • Open your sharing data in Microsoft Excel or Google Docs as a CSV,
  • Make widgets to publicly display sharing data on your site

Coming soon we will have content feeds that make it even simpler to create public widgets, like “Top Most Shared Items.” This is a great way to engage your community and re-distribute your own content.

The Geography Tab – A Deeper Look Into the New AddThis Analytics

The Service Tab – A Deeper Look Into the New AddThis Analytics

Sharing wouldn’t be what it is without the services that ingest your content. These are the communities on the web that your audiences and readers like to gather and share – their little corners of the vast social space.

We offer a lot of services in the AddThis menu and for good reason. Though someone in the US may have never heard of Orkut, that would be a far different story for someone from Brazil. Orkut is the country’s #1 service – responsible for 18% of sharing. Another point overlooked by those who may only use Facebook or Twitter share implementations is that many of these smaller, niche communities, like Yammer or Reddit, get an amazing amount of engagement from their users, equaling more traffic for less output of your content.

So, that brings us to the Services tab and what you may be missing by not taking a look:

The Audience Tab – A Deeper Look Into the New AddThis Analytics

The Audience tab is one of the most exciting parts of the new analytics. We really gave you some new and juicy data. Your audience is one of, if not THE, most important part about your site. These are the people who bring you traffic, read your content, leave comments and hopefully SHARE what they like (and maybe sometimes what they don’t like). So, this is why we felt it was important to bring you more of what AddThis had to offer about the types of people visiting your site.

Here’s a breakdown of what you are getting when you venture into the Audience tab:

This is the Daily Active Audience Breakdown - with All Sharers, Influencers and Clickers

1. Daily Active Audience Breakdown with 3 different types of Users

  • All Sharers – all sharers from your site
  • Influencers – those whose shares get traffic back to your site
  • Clickers – people who click on shares

2. Top Interests of your overall audience (as well as the ability to sort them by the 3 types mentioned above)

The Content Tab – A Deeper Look Into the New AddThis Analytics

We recently announced the launch of our brand new AddThis analytics. While we gave you a nice little video to give you a pretty good idea of what the new features had to offer, we thought it would help to dig a little deeper – just to make sure you aren’t missing any of the goodies! So, we’re going to do a series of blog posts, each one highlighting the four main sections of the AddThis analytics data.

Here you can see your Content dashboard with all your shares and the ability to sort by Shares and Clicks.
Here you can see your Content dashboard with all your shares and the ability to sort by Shares and Clicks.

Looking at the tab interface, let’s go from left to right and start with Content. We’re big fans of lists so it’s fitting we thought it would be the best way to show you the breakdown of what you can do with your Content!

1. See a breakdown of your shared content focusing on the number of shares, clicks (how many clicks or “views” the shared content garnered) and viral lift (a percentage of shares that got clicks).

Here you can see a deeper look into a specific piece of shared content, with the daily shares and clicks, recent Tweets and Facebook Mentions.
Here you can see a deeper look into a specific piece of shared content, with the daily shares and clicks, recent Tweets and Facebook Mentions.

2. The ability to sort by the Most Shared or Most Clicked (most clicked = most viral)

  • Figure out what types of content is getting shared the most – is it about a certain topic or follow a specific format, like lists or tips?
  • Do certain titles get more clicks? Maybe they are more attention-grabbing or have some sort of “buzz” word.

3. The ability to look deeper into each piece of shared content to see sharing patterns

  • See recent Tweets
  • Facebook Mentions – including shares, likes and comments!
  • Top services that specific piece of content was shared to as well as which countries
  • Top sharing referrers – see the search terms that brought users to specific pieces of content
These are the services a specific piece of content was shared to as well as the most popular search terms that brought a user to that content.
These are the services a specific piece of content was shared to as well as the most popular search terms that brought a user to that content.

All of these capabilities are great ways to really dig down and figure out what your users find interesting and what engages them. See a burst in shares? Narrow down the date range and zoom in on that content. Use that data to tailor your content and to make it share-worthy!

If you have ANY questions or feedback about the new analytics – not sure about a piece of data, have an idea of a feature you’d love to see – please reach out to us! (kori@addthis.com or justin@addthis.com) We LOVE connecting with our users.

AddThis Twitter Account Has Presidential-Level Authority

AddThis has been ranked as the #3 Twitter profile in a list of the Top 25 Most Influential Twitter profiles by page authority in an article by SEOmoz! We are third place only behind Barack Obama and Mashable.

We also rank fourth overall when factoring in individual Twitter accounts, being beat by notorious tweeter Ashton Kutcher. But we still out-rank the likes of Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, tangledKanye West and Conan O’Brien.

Some other big name tech services on the list are Twitter, Google, YouTube and TechCrunch, just to name a few. We’d say that’s pretty good company!

Thanks so much to our community and all our wonderful followers, as well as SEOmoz for the awesome article!
