Visitors can now track their comments, use their Facebook login & avatar on your site, upload photos, embed YouTube videos, and much more. This community building service is easy to install, simple to customize, and comes with fine grained controls.
At AddThis, when we reach a company milestone, we like to take some time to reflect and celebrate the accomplishment. Well, today we’re celebrating two milestones.
We’ve passed 10,000 members in the AddThis Developer Forum. The forum is a relatively new part of the community. It was added back 3 months ago in November 2008. To see this much growth really demonstrates the extent to which AddThis is becoming ubiquitous within the marketplace.
Secondly, we’ve passed 10,000 downloads of the new AddThis WordPress plug-in. This is just since we launched the updated version at the end of December 2008.
We truly thank you all for your support. Together, we’re making it easier for your content to be shared and moved to every corner of the Social Web. If there is anything we can do better, don’t hesitate to drop us a line: comment on this post, post in our forum, or e-mail me personally – firstname.lastname@example.org
AddThis user Derek Poore recently e-mailed us this AWESOME display advertisement that he created for AddThis, to show his support. We thought it was so cool that we wanted to share it with you all.
Note: This has been cross-posted on the Clearspring blog.
Friends, I have some great news. With your help, we’ve been nominated for three categories of Mashable’s Open Web Awards. Clearspring has been nominated for best in Embeddable Widgets. AddThis has been nominated for best in Blog Plugins and and Social Bookmarking.
All I can say is THANK YOU!. Your nominations & votes mean so much to us. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you. It’s all of your time, thoughts, and feedback, which have helped to make our tools best-in-class. We’re absolutely a team in this process.
Well, we need your help again. We’re on to Round 1 of voting for the Open Web Awards. Mashable has created these handy dandy widgets to help with the voting process. (See the links below) We’ve taken their widgets and wrapped them with our widget platform Launchpad so that you can place them and share them all over the Web.
Until midnight on November 30th, you can vote once for Clearspring and AddThis every 24 hours in the categories we’re in.
Thanks again for all your help with this. Here are the widgets:
Friends, first let me introduce myself. My name is Justin Thorp. I’m the Community Manager at Clearspring Technologies, the parent company of AddThis. Going forward, I will be working with Dom to help let you know about all the exciting developments planned for the AddThis sharing platform.
We’ve been heads down on adding and improving AddThis features. We want you to have the best tool possible for sharing your bookmarks and favorite Web pages.
Today, we’re pleased to announce a bunch of new features. Here’s a rundown:
Web Site Redesign & New Forum
First off, we’ve had our design and user-experience brain trust give the Web site a fresh coat of paint. We hope that you like the new design. We want to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible for you to be able to grab/customize the AddThis button and view your stats.
When you go to view your reports, you’ll see that we’ve redesigned them too. We’ve put in all-new charts, which look hot and animate in a fun way, besides being way faster to generate than our old charts. We’ve also added a forum. This is to better serve you and help you find answers to your problems. Hopefully this will also be a center of community and innovation around sharing, using the AddThis platform.
We’ve integrated Clearspring’s analytics platform into AddThis. This means our analytics are going to be much faster and more reliable. Going forward, we’ll be able to collect more data and thus generate more reports that will show you how your content is getting shared across the Web.
Our engineers have been working hard to optimize the AddThis sharing button. We want the button and menu to load as fast as possible. When your Web site or blog is getting viewed by a lot of people, every millisecond counts. The button code is now just 3K at load time and only 17K once the user hovers and interacts with the menu. This continues to put us far ahead of the competition in regards to giving you the features you want, using the least amount code possible.
AddThis has also become a bit more worldly. We’ve recently added support for the following languages: Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Taiwanese.
The Future & Feedback
Again, we are focused on making sure that AddThis has the best features possible. In order to do this, we’re depending on your feedback. Please join us in the forums to discuss the future! You can also reach me personally at email@example.com.
With a recent release, you can now share MapQuest Local pages with your friends and the world using AddThis. Back in early September, MapQuest launched MapQuest Local, a portal that aggregates information together about your town or city.
As you can see from the screenshot at the beginning of the post, just hover over the orange AddThis plus sign and you’ll see the traditional AddThis menu. If you click on the plus sign, you’ll get the pop-up menu.
So… go find your town with MapQuest Local and share the page with others.
As you know, we recently joined Clearspring, the leading widget network connecting publishers and advertisers to audiences on the social web. Over the last several years, Clearspring has built a world-class analytics engine for distributed applications. Over the next several months, the AddThis team will be leveraging that engine to create and test all kinds of cool stuff as we build our Universal Sharing Platform. At the beginning, we are using it to get a better handle on how people are using AddThis. Moving forward, we will be using these insights to create a better sharing experience, deep publisher analytics, monetization capabilities, and more. This is an exciting time for AddThis, so stay tuned for more news. As always, let us know your ideas and suggestions – we would love your feedback (info at addthis.com). You can also check our Help section if you have questions.
AddThis is now part of Clearspring! In case you’ve missed the widget phenomenon, Clearspring is the leading platform in the category. In fact, they created the widget category. The company helps end users move embeddable content from one website to another, with just a few mouse clicks. Our two companies have a lot in common and everybody is very pleased about this merger. Both AddThis and Clearspring enable the sharing of content, which is becoming one of the fastest growing and most popular forms of communication on the Web.
The AddThis service will continue to enable simplified sharing. Nothing will change on your website, nor will you need to take any action either. I am confident that Clearspring is 100% committed to providing sharing tools that retain the look, feel and integrity of your website. As we move forward, we do have plans for integrating some of Clearspring’s analytics tools, to help you better track how your content is being spread. Of course, we’ll get you more information on those improvements as they become available.
A little history on this news: We’ve been working with Clearspring for a while. The relationship started as a proposed partnership however, after working closely together, we realized that the relationship was even more complementary then either side had originally anticipated. So, the leadership from both companies determined that together we could provide publishers with much more value as a single, unified entity. We saw that we could create a universal sharing platform for the Web. So, there you have it.
I want to thank everyone who has ever used the AddThis service and tell you that this is just the beginning. By uniting the two companies, we’ve become the No.1 content sharing service on the Internet.
There’s more to this story. Click here to read the full press release.
It’s already been 18 months since we launched, an eternity in Internet time, and AddThis is continuing to grow very fast. Here is a graph we wanted to share with you. It gives a good idea of how fast our button is spreading. The graph shows how many times the button has been served each month since we started in October 2006 – over 20 Billion times in April alone (that’s 7,500 per second).
We have recently done a lot of under-the-hood work, to keep up with this fast growth. Stay tuned, we are also working on a lot of cool new features, including more analytics, more customization.
Only a few more days and it’s already 2008. How time flies! We hope you are all enjoying the holiday season. Here is a brief message with the latest news about AddThis.
More Analytics. To help you start off the new year, we have upgraded our stats interface to give you more analytics about how your content is bookmarked and shared by your visitors. Here are the new features:

Our Team. Our team is expanding as well. We are excited to announce that Brian Jones has joined AddThis. Brian is a sys/admin/infrastructure guru; he founded Linuxlaboratory.org, created Python Magazine, helped found php|architect magazine, and is the co-author of Linux Server Hacks 2 for O’Reilly publishing. Brian is already working hard setting up tomorrow’s infrastructure for AddThis, making sure AddThis can continue to deliver its great service reliably as it continues to grow.
AddThis Trends. As most of you know by now, each month we publish a report of the top most active bookmarking/sharing and feed reader services. Below is the report for the top bookmarking/sharing services for November. You can find more reports here.
