Happy Holidays!

Our team wanted to take a moment and wish everyone happy holidays. Historically, we’ve created special logos. This year we wanted to give a quick shout out to Josh Cleland for providing an illustration for us to use.

Ps. Can you find the easter egg on our homepage. If you like it, give Foo a high five. :)

Shirts Worth Sharing

Our team wanted to take a moment to thank CustomInk for taking us on a tour of their office. They have one of the coolest spaces in Tysons Corner. They make great shirts and their team has a penchant for customer service. If you’re looking for inspiration or need to order some gear, check ‘em out.

Security Alert for AddThis WordPress plugin

Late yesterday, the accounts of several popular plugins on wordpress.org were compromised, including the AddThis plugin account. Malicious code was inserted into these plugins, opening a backdoor for potential third party code to execute on your server. The issue affected version 2.1.3 of the AddThis plugin, and you will be affected only if you downloaded that version yesterday or this morning. We have also patched the plugin as of this morning, and version 2.2.0 is fully certified.

WordPress has reset all accounts, and is updating status in this post.

All users of the AddThis WordPress plugin are STRONGLY encouraged to upgrade to the latest version (2.2.0) as quickly as possible, especially if you updated or installed version 2.1.3 of the AddThis WordPress plugin (June 20, 2011) yesterday or (June 21, 2011) today.

In order to upgrade, please visit the upgrades page inside your WordPress instillation. You can also grab the latest version from the WordPress repository

We will continue to work with the WordPress team on this. If we have more information, we will update this post.

The AddThis Team

In our continuing efforts to provide you with the best service possible we’re doing big upgrades to our data center. Unfortunately this means that sometimes we’ll have to take services down to move them to bigger and better boxes. We have a downtime scheduled for Wednesday, June 15th between 4AM EDT and 7AM EDT (8 AM to 11 AM GMT). The following services will be unavailable during this window:

  • AddThis.com
  • The support forums
  • Analytics.

Sharing will still be available and analytics will still be collected. We’ll be updating our status page (http://status.addthis.com/) to let everyone know what’s going on during this move.

Thanks in advance for your patience and for using AddThis!

Updates to AddThis for Joomla

We’ve updated the AddThis for Joomla plugin to now support Joomla 1.6. We’ve also integrated options for the AddThis share counter, which can be found in the Settings area.

Are you a user of Joomla and have feedback or feature requests? Please post them in the comments below.

Also, be sure to check out all our great sharing tool plugins on our Sharing Tools page!

We recently introduced our Content Feed API, which allows you to easily access RSS and JSON feeds of your top shared or clicked content. You can add these feeds to your site and widgets to encourage users to interact with your most interesting content!

We’ve now added a great tool for previewing what could be pulled into your content feed as well as an easy way to grab the code for displaying it on your site. Head over to the Content Feed API docs and check out the Configure Your Feed section (note: you must be logged into your AddThis account for this feature to work).

If you have more than one domain, choose the one you would like to configure. Then select the feed to display, a choice between Trending Content, Most Shared and Most Clicked. Finally, pick your time frame and then hit Generate Your Feed to see the preview populate! Below the preview, you’ll notice convenient code to grab as you please.

We strongly encourage you to implement a feed on your site using the Content Feed API. Displaying top content has proven to be a great way to recirculate traffic and keep users engaged, increasing their time spent on your site.

If you have any questions about implementing a content feed, please feel free to post in the comments, our technical support forum or email us. Also, if you’ve implemented anything on your site using our Content Feed API, we’d love to see it!

You may have noticed your Facebook Like buttons have a little something extra today: A scroll bar.

Facebook Like Button with Scroll Bar

Turns out Facebook changed the way they’re displaying the Like button and since we just pass it along – with a little special sauce to capture them for our analytics – it’s causing a problem for our users.

Luckily, we’ve got a couple solutions for this until we can put out an official fix, which should be soon.

First, you can make sure you have Facebooks FBML namespace in your <html> tag. For example:

<html xmlns:fb="http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml">

You might have other namespaces in the HTML tag. Just make sure everything it includes xmlns:fb=”http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml” before the greater-than sign.

Second, you can alter the code for the AddThis Facebook like button to specify the appropriate height by adding an fb:like:height attribute, like this:

<a class="addthis_button_facebook_like" fb:like:height="25">

If you have any questions regarding this issue please post them in the forum topic or feel free to email us at support@addthis.com.

Thanks in advance for your patience, and thanks for using AddThis!

Hi, I’m Paul (Not the alien.)

Hello, I’m Paul Rothrock, the new product support engineer at Clearspring. I’ll be helping Justin and Kori to make sure publishers and developers get the most out of the AddThis and its APIs.

Before I came to Clearspring I was a freelancer in my home town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I did a lot of work with small businesses and individuals to create web applications and personal sites. I’m excited to continue helping people use the great platform that AddThis has created.

The best place to see what’s on my mind is to follow @icelander on Twitter.

I’m sure I’ll be hearing from a lot of you, so if you have any questions feel free to contact me at paul@clearspring.com

While AddThis offers over 300 social networks, online bookmarking services and more, we realize that it’s an ever-changing marketplace and new services are emerging every week – sometimes every day! While we try to keep up the best we can and allow services to submit themselves, we also give publishers the freedom to add services that are currently unavailable in our menu.

This is also useful for services that are not for public consumption, i.e. they are on a private intranet or are invitation-only. So be sure to check out our docs on how to add Custom Services.

If you have added a custom service to your AddThis implementation, we would love to see it! Send us a link to your site or post in the comments.
