We are excited today to announce that AddThis now supports sharing to Google+ via the Google +1 button.  We know you have been asking us about sharing to Google+ and now this is possible with no changes to your code.

One-click Sharing

When a user clicks the +1 button they will now have a simple way to type a message and share to their Google+ profile.

Personal Annotations

One more important change you will start seeing with your +1 button today is personal annotations.  When users hover over the button they will see which of their friends have +1’d the same content.  If you want to show those annotations in-line we have an API to support that.

Learn how to get +1 for your website by visiting the +1 features page.

In an ongoing effort to keep our APIs consistent, we’ve added in the ability to configure the Twitter share in our OExchange sharing API.

What this means is, like the Tweet button, you can now configure Twitter sharing through the sharing API to have custom actions, like “via @YourTwitterUsername” or customized text. You also have the ability to choose accounts you’d like a user to follow after he or she shares, like in the image below.

For example, if you wanted to share a link to Twitter in your Email Newsletter and have it use your Twitter account, you’d do this:

<a href="http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/twitter/offer?&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.addthis.com%2F&via=twitteruser&related=twitteruser" target="_blank" ><img src="http://cache.addthis.com/icons/v1/thumbs/twitter.gif" border="0" alt="Twitter" /></a>

Please let us know if you have any questions.

You ask, we listen! You can now use AddThis Analytics to track bit.ly link shortner activity.

Like our Facebook Mentions and Recent Tweets, you do not need to do any set-up to receive the bit.ly data and this additional feature will give you an even bigger snapshot of how that specific piece of content is performing on all your different social channels.

Bit.ly stats are shown on the Content Detail page of the associated story, which you can find by clicking on any piece on content in your Analytics dashboard or from the Content tab.

If you have any feedback or requests for other 3rd party tracking services you would like to see in the AddThis Analytics, please post in the comments below or email us.

AddThis now supports registering and signing in with your Twitter account, along with the Facebook, Google and Open ID options already provided.

Several of your favorite social networking sites can make it easier to keep your data on other sites secure. We’re excited to offer popular options like Twitter, Facebook and Google so you don’t have to remember another account email and password.

If you have any questions or experience any issues, please feel free to visit our tech support forum or shoot us an email.

We recently added the ability to connect your Facebook Page and Twitter account to the AddThis analytics dashboard.

We are constantly trying to find ways to better connect you to all your social channels and give you the convenience of viewing your data all in one place. Not only does this save you time, but it gives you the ability to measure how your content is driving new followers and fans. We think an overall view of all your channels is essential to understanding the social activity taking place on your site and how users are interacting with you.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding these features or have something you’d like to see in your analytics reports, please comment below or feel free to shoot us an email. We’re always listening!

Last week we released five new services to the AddThis menu. Stylish Home, URLCapt, Kindle It, Scoop.it and Go.vn.

We are constantly updating our service list to make sure that it is easy to share content everywhere online. If there is a service you like to use that is not included in the AddThis menu, please shoot us a note and we’ll do what we can to get it in there!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us or post in the comments below.

We will be rolling our additional capacity to address this problem, and appreciate your patience as we expand AddThis to be better than ever. As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Viral Click Tracking for All

AddThis click tracking is a powerful feature that allows you to measure the amount of traffic and viral lift you get from social sharing. By appending a tag to your shared URLs we can tell you which social networks send you the most clicks and what content is most viral. Click tracking is hugely popular and has been deployed by over half of our users since launch a year ago.

Soon, we’ll be rolling out click tracking as a default feature for all users (you may already be using it). You don’t have to do anything to turn it on and you’ll start seeing click and viral lift data in your analytics dashboard. We’re going to use this data to provide you with more detailed traffic source reporting in the near future. Click tracking data is also used to optimize your content feeds which help recirculate traffic within your site.

Happy sharing and please visit our forum if you have any questions.

Making AddThis More Accessible

Most times when we announce a new feature or improvement, we invite you to take a look. This isn’t one of those times. Instead, this feature announcement is about listening and touching AddThis. We have updated our code to work better with keyboard navigation and screen readers. Now when you visit a site that is using AddThis, you can tab through all of the available sharing options. If you choose to see more options, you can easily filter the list of services and then tab to the one you like. We’ve also added focus styling so if you are navigating with a keyboard, you’ll have a better idea where you are. Also, if you are using a screen reader, you should properly hear the name of the service.

If you’re a publisher you might be asking yourself, “How do I make this available to my users?” It’s easy, we’ve enabled this for everyone. Your site’s visitors are now even more able to share whatever they like, wherever they like.

The key highlights of what we did:

  • Toolboxes are keyboard navable
  • Toolboxes are marked up so screen readers can use them all
  • The expanded menu is keyboard navable and closable with the esc key
  • Graphs and maps in analytics have alternatives for screen readers

At AddThis, all of our users are important to us and we believe it should be as easy as possible for users to share content from their favorite publishers. This is just one step in our continuous journey to make AddThis as great as we can. We have been able to get some feedback from Russell Heimlich and other accessibility experts to help make this happen. If you have ideas or suggestions on how we can give you a high quality experience with AddThis, please get in touch!
