How to Troubleshoot the AddThis Tools

Why aren’t my AddThis tools showing up?

The AddThis dashboard lets you make changes to your site without having to change the code. However, there are a few things that might go wrong. Don’t worry – we’re here to help you troubleshoot!

Here are a few things you may want to check:

Seeing changes immediately

When you set up new tools, the settings should be reflected on your site almost immediately. Try refreshing a few times or waiting for just a few minutes for the changes to be pushed to our servers around the world. If you enabled a related posts layer we will need some time to populate the feeds for these layers.

New related posts tools

If you just installed a related posts tool from AddThis for the first time, it could take a few hours to appear. These recommendations are built based on the behavior of visitors on your site, so clicking around can help.

No AddThis code on the page

Make sure you have the code on your page. You can get this code by going to the Tool Gallery and clicking the “Get the Code” link in the top right.

Enable Tools

All AddThis tools are disabled by default. However, if you were using Smart Layers the settings will be overridden and the tools won’t show up. Go to the Tool Gallery to enable tools.

Checking the profile

AddThis makes changes to all pages using a particular profile id. To do this, use the instructions on this page. Then go to “Profile Options” in the Dashboard and verify that the profile IDs match.

WordPress, Joomla or other content management systems

The AddThis dashboard works with all of our existing plugins: WordPress, Joomla, and more. If you’re using the Smart Layers plugin, the settings in this dashboard trump the ones in the plugin. The dashboard also offers more plugins and additional features.

Check the domains (Pro users only)

Tools configured in the AddThis dashboard will only show up on domains that are enabled under your account if you’re using AddThis Pro. To make sure that the domain is enabled, go to the Billing section and click “Manage Domains”. Note: Currently and are separate domains, so they would both need to be enabled for it to work.

Working with multiple websites

Want different tools to show up on different websites? Just create an additional profile for each website. You can control each profile separately in the dashboard by switching profiles in the top right corner. To create new profiles go to “Profile Sharing” in the Dashbaord.
