We’ve got some really exciting news!

AddThis is now part of Clearspring!   In case you’ve missed the widget phenomenon, Clearspring is the leading platform in the category.  In fact, they created the widget category.  The company helps end users move embeddable content from one website to another, with just a few mouse clicks.  Our two companies have a lot in common and everybody is very pleased about this merger. Both AddThis and Clearspring enable the sharing of content, which is becoming one of the fastest growing and most popular forms of communication on the Web.

The AddThis service will continue to enable simplified sharing.  Nothing will change on your website, nor will you need to take any action either.  I am confident that Clearspring is 100% committed to providing sharing tools that retain the look, feel and integrity of your website.  As we move forward, we do have plans for integrating some of Clearspring’s analytics tools, to help you better track how your content is being spread. Of course, we’ll get you more information on those improvements as they become available.

A little history on this news: We’ve been working with Clearspring for a while. The relationship started as a proposed partnership however, after working closely together, we realized that the relationship was even more complementary then either side had originally anticipated. So, the leadership from both companies determined that together we could provide publishers with much more value as a single, unified entity. We saw that we could create a universal sharing platform for the Web. So, there you have it.

I want to thank everyone who has ever used the AddThis service and tell you that this is just the beginning.  By uniting the two companies, we’ve become the No.1 content sharing service on the Internet.

Over 20 Billion Buttons Served in April

button served It’s already been 18 months since we launched, an eternity in Internet time, and AddThis is continuing to grow very fast. Here is a graph we wanted to share with you. It gives a good idea of how fast our button is spreading. The graph shows how many times the button has been served each month since we started in October 2006 – over 20 Billion times in April alone (that’s 7,500 per second).

We have recently done a lot of under-the-hood work, to keep up with this fast growth. Stay tuned, we are also working on a lot of cool new features, including more analytics, more customization.

New Features – New Faces – Happy Holidays

Our Team. Our team is expanding as well. We are excited to announce that Brian Jones has joined AddThis. Brian is a sys/admin/infrastructure guru; he founded Linuxlaboratory.org, created Python Magazine, helped found php|architect magazine, and is the co-author of Linux Server Hacks 2 for O’Reilly publishing. Brian is already working hard setting up tomorrow’s infrastructure for AddThis, making sure AddThis can continue to deliver its great service reliably as it continues to grow.

We are hiring. We are currently looking for a front-end guru. If you live and breath AJAX, Javascript, and PHP, and are obsessed with creating the best possible tools for users, then we want to hear from you. We offer very good salaries and great benefits, and even the possibility to work from home.

AddThis Trends. As most of you know by now, each month we publish a report of the top most active bookmarking/sharing and feed reader services. Below is the report for the top bookmarking/sharing services for November. You can find more reports here.

AddThis Recommended at SES New York

We couldn’t attend Search Engine Strategies in New York last week, but we were very excited to learn that AddThis was mentioned several times during this high-profile 4-day conference. This is very encouraging considering that AddThis has only been online for 6 months at this point.

Here are the two sessions where AddThis was mentioned (from Search Engine Roundtable coverage of SES):

100 Million Buttons Served To-Date – 2 Million / Day

Ooops! We did it again…We just passed the 2 million mark (up 100% from last month).

AddThis is now serving over 2 million buttons each day, which brings us to a total of over 100 million buttons served since we launched back in October at DEMO.

Thank you, to all of you for using our widgets and for sending us constant feedback so we can continue to improve our service.

To mark this event we have decided to release some interesting statistics based on data we have gathered since we launched. The statistics show the relative popularity of the bookmarking services and feed readers we support. Note: ‘Favorites’ here means all bookmarks saved locally (in the browser, and for any type of browser).

Bookmarking Services

Feed Reader Services

The graph for bookmarking services looks as we expected, but we were surprised to see how popular Google Readers has become, especially compared to Bloglines.

We will soon make these kinds of statistics available for web publishers, in their AddThis account, so they can have a better idea of where their content is bookmarked or fed to. Interestingly, these charts will look very different from site to site.

1,000,000 Buttons per Day – We Did It!

Last month we said the number of AddThis buttons served each day would probably reach the 1,000,000 milestone by the end of January. After writing that entry, we looked at each other and said: “Can we really do this? Maybe we should have said February!”.

Well, we are happy to report that our prediction was absolutely on target. As of yesterday, AddThis is serving over 1,000,000 buttons per day. To put it into perspective, that’s about 40,000/hour, 700/minute, or 11/sec. Not bad…except for the bandwidth, ouch!

So moving to new servers was an absolute must if we wanted to continue to provide a reliable service and a fast delivery of the buttons. Maybe this is a good time for removing that BETA sign from our website.

Anyway, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for using the button. Please continue to spread the word.

May the Social Force be with you! :-)
